When a Shingle Repair Turns Into Something Much Bigger

We get calls all the time that start the same way - 'it's probably just a few shingles.' And sometimes it is. But sometimes you get up on the roof and realize pretty fast that what you're looking at goes a lot deeper than surface damage.

Here's what we were working with on this one. Shingles torn away, the underlayment compromised, and exposed decking that had clearly been taking on moisture for a while. You can see the wood beginning to break down right through the opening - that's not something you patch over and call it a day. That's rotted decking, and it has to come out.

This is one of the most common things we run into with roof repair calls. A homeowner notices a few lifted or missing shingles and assumes it's a quick fix. What they don't know is that water has likely been getting in through that gap for months - sometimes longer. By the time it's visible from the outside, the damage underneath is usually worse than expected.

That's exactly why a proper inspection matters. Not just a look from the ground or a quick glance at the shingles. You have to get up there, pull back what's failing, and actually see what the decking looks like. Skipping that step means you're just covering up a problem, not solving it.
